THE GREAT SOUTH EAST - QUEENSLAND
from Holidays & Honeymoons magazine, story by Natalie Bannister, photography Tourism Queensland

If it’s sunshine you’re looking for, few places on earth can rival the golden rays which permeate the ‘Sunshine State’. It is everywhere; shimmering on the water, punctuating the land and glowing on the freckled cheeks of the people who are lucky enough to live here. The south Queensland coastline is as diverse as it is spectacular, exciting as it is relaxing, and always romantic.

The Gold Coast

All that glitters is gold, and nothing shines more brightly than the fabulous Gold Coast. Running north from the New South Wales-Queensland border and halfway to the state’s capital city of Brisbane, the Gold Coast is home to 55 kilometres of golden sandy beaches to the east, hectares of lush tropical rainforests and beautiful mountain ranges to the west, and spectacular waterways that weave their way through the middle.

The Gold Coast has it all and more. It is one of those rare places of beauty, where the green of the mountains meets the gold of the sand and the alluring blue of the sea. A mecca for lovers of fun and relaxation, the Gold Coast is a city where the skyscrapers and neon lights of famous Surfers Paradise easily mingle with a bounty of natural attractions in a laid-back, beach haven. Beach bums, cosmopolitans and international visitors share the gold - the sun, surf and sand - as well as great shopping, world class sporting events, superb cuisine and a thriving nightlife.

There is so much to see and do that you will have a hard time deciding how to spend your time! Days can be spent lazing on one of the many beaches, surfing the waves and soaking up the famous Gold Coast sun or lunching at a beachside cafe. Browse the weekend beach-side arts and craft markets or go shopping at one of the international-standard shopping centres. For the more active there’s hot air ballooning, exciting theme or wildlife parks, internationally renowned golf courses, bungy jumping, kart racing, scuba diving or jet skiing. However, you may prefer to take a trip to the Gold Coast Hinterland for a natural pick-me-up, or do nothing at all while lazing around your resort pool.
Nights are equally, if not more, exciting. Dine out at any one of the fine restaurants on offer along the entire Gold Coast stretch, try your luck at the Casino or mingle with the local club goers. Finish the evening with a cocktail at a lounge bar, before retiring to the comfort of your hotel room for a glimpse of the glittering coastline by night.

The Gold Coast’s heady concoction of delights beckons those with a love for all that is romantic, sparkling blue and wet. Indulge in every passion and explore every pleasure.
