Northern Rivers

The ‘Tropical North’ of New South Wales is characterised by magical beaches, rolling
hills and verdant rainforest. Photo courtesy Tourism New South Wales.

Tropical New South Wales is alive, enchanting and ever-changing. Here, life is slowed down to a more than pleasurable pace, leaving plenty of time to explore and discover each and every delight. Discover sweeping beaches along a pristine coastline, sea-side townships and surfing communities, national parks and rolling hills, verdant tropical rainforest, canefields, tropical farmlands and unique cultures ... discover yourself!

The Northern Rivers region spans the far north-east of New South Wales and offers the perfect touring holiday. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to access the wonderful natural attractions the coastline has to offer. Take your time. The word ‘hurry’ is not in this region’s vocabulary, but ‘beautiful’ certainly is!

Heading south just minutes from the Queensland state border, through the stunning Tweed region, past the hinterland Rainbow region and along the coastal road, you’re bound to arrive at beautiful, eclectic Byron Bay, where every day is a celebration of life. It’s no coincidence that Byron has evolved into a mecca for those who share a kinship with nature, including some rather avante garde locals. With an environment like Byron’s it is hard not to appreciate the beauty and enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer: golden sands, beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests, rolling green hills and abundant wildlife. Those who come here once are almost certain to return, and some never want to leave at all.

In the heart of Byron Bay, the streets are filled with an extraordinary array of international cuisine, great pubs and eclectic shopping. This is blended with cultural and spiritual celebrations to create a potent combination of life and vitality that is truly contagious.
The Ballina shire, further south of Byron past the delightful surfing communities of Lennox Head and Ballina, is the southern-most gateway to the Northern Rivers region. The natural beauty of the area is characterised by plantations of macadamia, avocado, coffee, tropical fruits and tea trees, and the scenic ‘Tourist Drive 28’ weaves its way inland and through the delightful communities that are hidden away there.
