The Great Ocean Road
from Holidays & Honeymoons magazine, story by Natalie Bannister, photography Tourism Victoria

The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most awe-inspiring coastal drives. From the wildlife and fauna of the Otway Ranges to the wind-swept, chiselled landscape of the Shipwreck Coast, the scenery is as diverse as it is stunning and as fierce as it is beautiful. Huge cliffs, roaring seas, safe beaches, spectacular rainforest, historic shipwrecks and the famous Twelve Apostles combine to create a

masterpiece that has been meticulously sculpted by nature’s perfect hand. Warm and friendly people inhabit this land in cities, townships and tiny hamlets, each with its own distinct identity. Be captivated, enthralled and surprised with every twist and bend of this enchanting road.
Each turn reveals yet another opportunity to stop for a short break where you can enjoy a coffee at a cafe, a meal at a restaurant or a stroll in a lush park or along the waterfront to stretch your legs before continuing on your coastal Victoria odyssey. each and every community is equally deserving of a day trip or overnight or longer stay.

Dense bush mingles with sparkling blue ocean as the Great Ocean Road weaves its way along the sandy beaches and lush surrounding hills and onwards to shimmering waters and rainforest.

Breathtaking landscape of gigantic rock pillars, deep gorges, spectacular arches and massive cliffs make the far reaches of this area one of the most awe inspiring in Australia. This rugged part of Victoria’s coast and the wild weather it has been dealt have reduced many a proud ship to wrecks, thus earning this region the name of the Shipwreck Coast. It is this same ferociousness that has carved out the stunning natural rock features of places like the famous Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge, The Grotto and The Blowhole.

A journey down the Great Ocean Road is a communication with nature. Like a serpent, the road twists and turns and grips you with every ounce of powerful strength it has in its possession, until you fall prey to its mysterious beauty, relax and let it take you with it.
